New support for families at IEP meetings
Beginning January 1, 2026, Illinois schools must inform parents that they may bring support people, including advocates or individuals knowledgeable about their child, to IEP meetings. Schools must also share information about IEP facilitation, a free and voluntary process in which a trained neutral facilitator helps keep the meeting productive and focused on the student’s needs. This provides families with more information and support before the meeting, while maintaining all existing parent rights.

In accordance with Public Act 104-0047, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) released an updated Individualized Education Program (IEP) Facilitation Fact Sheet. Translations of this document are now available.
